# ADNOC signs OpenAI and G42 deal for connected energy planning

ADNOC’s November 2 agreement with OpenAI and G42 targets connected industrial planning. Deployment timing and independently measured results remain undisclosed.

**Summary:**

ADNOC plans AI-assisted field and commercial decisions with OpenAI and G42. The agreement is distinct from a separate Abu Dhabi government pilot already in production.

ADNOC announced a multi-year agreement with OpenAI and G42 on November 2 to build AI-assisted decision systems for its energy business. The proposed work connects field development with commercial planning, extending the enterprise-AI story beyond employee chat tools.

## What the partners plan to build

According to [ADNOC’s announcement](https://www.adnoc.ae/media-center/news/2026/11/ADNOC-Signs-Landmark-Partnership-Agreement-with-OpenAI), the initial applications cover integrated field-development planning and decisions across production, processing, refining, logistics, sales and trading. OpenAI Frontier will combine the company’s industrial information with AI capabilities on G42 infrastructure in the UAE. Human experts are to retain oversight of consequential decisions.

ADNOC describes development planning in hours rather than months as an ambition of the system. The announcement supplies no independent evaluation establishing that gain, no contract value and no date for completing deployment. Its industry-first positioning is also the company’s claim. The agreement does not introduce a new foundation model.

## One agreement within a wider Abu Dhabi push

The [Abu Dhabi Media Office’s November 2 account](https://www.mediaoffice.abudhabi/en/crown-prince-news/khaled-bin-mohamed-bin-zayed-meets-sam-altman-and-witnesses-signing-of-agreements-with-openai/) describes four agreements spanning energy, government and investment. It identifies a separate food-import regulatory pilot with the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority as already in production. In that initiative, defined rules are made machine-readable, assessments remain traceable to those rules, and officials retain final accountability.

That pilot’s current status should not be read as confirmation that ADNOC’s proposed platform is already fully deployed. Likewise, the five-year term mentioned in the government release applies to the separate Inception42–OpenAI agreement covering adoption across government, enterprise and education. ADNOC describes its own agreement as multi-year.

## What would demonstrate progress

Our assessment is that the consequential test will be the quality of decisions, not simply the number of agents connected. A useful follow-up would report performance against a defined planning baseline, the frequency of expert corrections, and how recommendations change when operational data is incomplete.

For enterprise readers, the distinction is practical: a signed partnership establishes a development commitment; measured results require evidence from the resulting workflows. Keeping the responsible human decision-maker visible is especially important when an AI recommendation can influence capital allocation or physical operations.
