# METR finds faster AI development at Anthropic, with major evidence gaps

METR estimates faster benchmark progress at Anthropic, but uncertain attribution and redacted evidence limit what the result proves.

**Summary:**

An independent assessment estimates a 1.9× increase in Anthropic’s benchmark-progress rate. The causal explanation remains uncertain, and key evidence is redacted.

A new assessment from METR puts a difficult question back in focus: is AI helping laboratories develop better AI faster?

In its November 5 report, METR estimates that Anthropic’s internal AECI benchmark-progress rate accelerated **1.9 times** after October 2025, with a reported 95% confidence interval of **1.5–2.8 times**. This is a change in the pace of progress, not a claim that a particular model is 1.9 times as intelligent.

## Evidence with important limits

The assessment used internal information and interviews collected from August 12 through October 29. METR judges that AI probably explains much of the acceleration, but that attribution is uncertain. Anthropic redacted much of the evidence METR considered most informative.

## How to read the finding

The useful distinction is between an observed trend and an explanation for it. A benchmark trend can support concern about faster development without proving that AI caused the entire change. The chart shows the reported statistical interval, not every source of uncertainty.

For readers following AI releases, this is research about the development process, not a new model announcement or an independent leaderboard. It offers no basis for choosing a commercial model solely from the headline multiplier. Procurement decisions still need evaluations on the actual work, alongside cost, reliability and access requirements.
